W.R.O.T.E After School

Shannah Dixon,  Learning Center Education Director

THE MISSION of the Housing Authority of Bowling Green’s After School Program is provide for students in grades K-12, a positive and safe learning environment to develop the necessary tools to increase academic performance, leadership and life-long learning.  The Housing Authority of Bowling Green continues to serve the students in and around residential sites in the Bryant Way, Phenix Place and the Summit View/Gordon Ave developments.  With recent budgets cuts we were forced to close down the Learning Center of Phenix Place and Bryant Way. With generous help from the Burton Memorial Baptist Church and approximately 50 WKU volunteer students, services for approximately 25 students continue three (3) days a week at our Bryant Way location. This great volunteer effort has reduced the financial burden on the HABG Learning Center budget, costing us only the salary of one staff member, utilities for the building, and the purchase of computers for academic use. Through this great partnership, academic enrichment, tutoring and after-school care continues to assist the students and their families of Bryant Way.

We’re Reaching Out To Educate

For seven (7) weeks throughout the summer, academic learning continues through the Summer Academic Enrichment Camp. Forming strong partnerships with both the Warren County Public Schools (WCPS) and Bowling Green Independent School Districts (BGISD), the role of the HABG Learning Center thus becomes one of liaison between the students’ respective schools and their families. This would not be possible if not for the commitment on the part of Superintendents Mr. Rob Clayton (WCPS) and Mr. Joe Tinius (BGISD). Coordinating with Superintendents, Principals and other school administrators, we are able to develop an educational curriculum focusing on an increase in the academic areas of math, science, literacy, personal develop and practical living skills. Modifying the Kentucky Department of Education Combined Curriculum and the Bowling Green Independent School District Core Content Curriculums, the programming has proven to increase academic knowledge of each student and increased overall educational outcomes. With the gracious help from the BGISD and the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service, breakfast and lunch is served daily to 130 students attending summer camp.
